A harness is a great thing to have on the road with a dog because it keeps them still and safe, and God forbid if you get into an accident it will protect him the same way your seatbelt will protect you. I have known dogs to go flying through cars that have been struck, it did not end out well for the dog, so it is very important to keep your dog secure when he rides.
Aside from that, you may want to bring along one or two of his favorite toys or a rawhide so he has something to keep him occupied during the drive.
